Clinton, MS was first settled in 1805 and was known as Mount Salus, which means "mountain of health" (This was due to the settlement being near a nice spring. Around the year 1828, the residents of Mount Salus wanted, what they considered to be, a more sophisticated name for the town. That was when the name "Clinton" was born. When it came time for Mississippians to choose the capital city, Clinton lost its bid.

Nevertheless, Clinton experienced economic growth and a population surge in the 1830s and 1840s due to the railroads passing through the town. Today, Clinton has continued to be a good place for businesses to plant their roots. Families also can take comfort in the fact that the public school system was ranked the number one school district in recent years and continues to receive an "A" ranking, which is the top academic ranking a public school system can attain.
